Beware of Tech Support Scams
Tech support scams involve criminals deceiving you into believing that your device or software needs urgent repair. They may charge a fee for a non-existent issue, steal your personal or financial information, or attempt to access your network to deploy ransomware.
Protect yourself by recognizing these five common signs of tech support scams and learning how to respond if targeted:
- Unexpected Calls
You receive an unprompted call from someone claiming to be tech support. (Caution: scammers can spoof Caller IDs to appear legitimate.)
- Urgent Error Messages
A pop-up or error message instructs you to call a number immediately for assistance.
- Unusual Payment Requests
The “technician” asks you to pay for services using cryptocurrency or gift cards.
- Software Installation Requests
You’re instructed to download software via email links or third-party websites.
- Requests for Sensitive Information
Tech support asks for your password or other confidential details.
Steps to Take if You’re Targeted
- Uninstall any software that scammers directed you to download.
- Run a full scan with your antivirus or Windows Security to remove malware.
- Reset your device if scammers gained access.
- Change all passwords immediately.
- Contact your credit card provider if payment was made.
- Contact your local police department
- Report the incident at the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre
- Online at: https://www.services.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/chooser-eng.html?ipeReferer=CAFCFRS
- Report by phone: 1-888-495-8501 Monday to Friday 1000am to 0445pm (EST)
Even if you haven’t been directly targeted, it’s important to report the incident to your local police department. Without reports, law enforcement cannot investigate or take action to shut down these scams. Awareness is the first step toward prevention!
